To be done properly it is best to remove the concrete in precise sections, by cutting with special concrete saws and then removing those sections. We highly recommend not attempting to remove concrete yourself and instead use a concrete contractor such as oursleves. First off, proper disposal of concrete slabs is important… and second, hitting the concrete with a sledgehammer can be a hazard with large and small pieces flying around you could be hurt. The question we always get asked is- “Should I pour my own concrete sidewalk, driveway, patio, (etc.).” and our short answer is, “NO!” While the materials are available to the average homeowner from the large box stores, it’s a process that shouldn’t be taken lightly. There are many factors that go into pouring concrete successfully. For example, the area must be prepared correctly. Pouring concrete or placing pavers directly on untreated soil will cause the concrete to crack, almost instantly.
Cement is a mixture of sand and gravel (aggregate). Mixing concrete, while it can be done with a shovel and rake by a homeowner, we use state-of-the-art mixing machines. Mixing the cement to the right texture is key to a good pour. We also factor in the North Carolina Weather, the humidity, heat, cold, etc. with every project. The mixing process and time differ with each project.
